Magadis Ensemble

 

L'ensemble:

il Magadis Ensemble è un’insolita formazione nata con l’intento di valorizzare e divulgare un repertorio di raro ascolto ma di grande suggestione e sicuro interesse, quello legato al novecento storico francese che, intriso di echi impressionisti, è stato uno dei più affascinanti periodi musicali.
La peculiarità del programma proposto consiste nel saggiare le rudi e sinuose sonorità scaturite da quell’interesse che molti compositori francesi, a cavallo fra ‘800 e ‘900 e oltre, avevano riservato alle culture esotiche e antiche, in particolar modo a quella greca. La Magadis, tanto per chiarire l'origine del nome, era uno strumento musicale usato nell'antica Grecia, simile a una grande arpa munita di dieci corde doppie accordate in ottava.
I componenti del Magadis Ensemble provengono dai più prestigiosi conservatori e accademie italiane ed europee (Conservatorio “G.Verdi” di Milano, Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana di Lugano, Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, Accademia di Imola) e hanno al loro attivo numerosi concerti (sia come solisti e cameristi che come strumentisti in prestigiose orchestre) e collaborazioni con importanti nomi della musica classica e leggera.

Il repertorio:

André Jolivet, con il suo Chant de Linos   (Paolo Vignaroli: flauto, Filippo Farinelli: pianoforte), ci cala nell’atmosfera funebre di una lamentazione inframezzata da grida e danze;
Maurice Ravel dà voce alla poesia greca nelle sue cinque melodie popolari greche (Chansons de la mariée , Tout gai! Federico Giubilei: baritono, Filippo Farinelli: pianoforte) mentre Claude Debussy ricorre alla mitologia e al simbolismo per suscitare impressioni sonore fantastiche e instabili, come avviene nel Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (che ricalca il poema di Mallarmé, qui proposto in una trascrizione per flauto (Monica Fagioli) e pianoforte (Filippo Farinelli), in Syrinx dove il flauto, riecheggiando lo stesso preludio del fauno, ripercorre la drammatica storia del satiro Pan e dell’amata Siringa oppure in Chansons de Bilitis (N. 1 , n. 9 Magadis Ensemble completo) dove affida ad una voce recitante i pensieri della saffica Bilitis accompagnati dagli arabeschi delle arpe e dei flauti e dall’argentina voce della celesta.



The ensemble

The Magadis Ensemble is an unusual formation founded with the intent of promoting and disseminating a repertoire that, though highly intriguing, is rarely heard and is bound to interest countless music lovers. This repertoire is tied to 20th-century France, a period imbued with impressionistic echoes and considered one of the most fascinating musical eras.
The proposed programme is unique, as it investigates the rough, sinuous sounds inspired by the interest of many French fin de siècle composers in exotic and ancient cultures, particularly that of Greece. The ensemble itself is named after a musical instrument used in ancient Greece, the magadis, which resembled an enormous harp and had ten pairs of strings tuned in octaves.
The members of the Magadis Ensemble hail from the most prestigious Italian and European conservatories and academies (the Verdi Conservatory in Milan, the Conservatory of Italian Switzerland in Lugano, the Fiesole Music School, the Imola Academy). They have performed in numerous concerts – as soloists and chamber musicians, and as instrumentalists in prestigious orchestras – and have collaborated with important names in classical music and pop.

The repertoire

André Jolivet, with his Chant de Linos, draws us into the funereal atmosphere of a lamentation broken up by cries and dances.
Maurice Ravel gives Greek poetry a voice in his five Greek folk songs, while Claude Debussy turns to mythology and symbolism to arouse fantastical and unstable sonorous impressions, such as those that emerge in his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, after Mallarmé’s poem. The work is proposed here in a transcription for flute and piano, in which the flute, echoing the prelude of the faun, tells the dramatic story of the satyr Pan and his beloved Syrinx. And then there is Les Chansons de Bilitis, in which a speaker recounts the thoughts of the Sapphic Bilitis, accompanied by the arabesques of the harps and flutes, and the silvery voice of the celesta.
